Quick Review of Apple’s New Bluetooth Wireless Keyboard

Back Story: I’ve been wanting a non-USB wireless keyboard for my Mac for quite sometime now and almost got one from my good friend Jason a few months ago. That ending up falling to the wayside because the money that I had set aside for it was lost one day at the movies theater. ( long story short: don’t put your money and cell phone in the same pocket). Thanks to the credit back from Apple because of all the crybabies who were upset over the $200 price drop of the iPhone, I was able to buy the latest and greatest keyboard on September 15th, 2007. Yes you read that correctly and yes it is October 8th, 2007. It took awhile to get here but it’s here, here’s my quick review.

Design: This is probably one of the best looking keyboards I have ever seen with the exception of this one. The space is used in such a way that there’s only enough mass for what’s needed for the keyboard to function great and comfortably. There’s nothing extra to the overall design of the keyboard that makes you think, “They could have shaved this off to make it smaller.” You can easily fit this into your laptop bag without worrying about needing extra room. I thought I would miss my number pad, but so far, so good. I’ve been training myself for about a month to not use it and it seems to be working. I know, kind of sad right? But I’ve been using it since I’ve learned how to type so I had to break that habit for the sake of the ultimate keyboard. The keys feel identical to my MacBook and also to the MacBook Pro. As a matter of fact, it feels like they just took the MacBook Pro’s keyboard and called it a day after adding in Bluetooth. 10/10

Fuctionailty: It’s a keyboard, it does what it’s suppose to do; simple as that. Typing on it is a joy and it feels like a full keyboard. One thing to note: In anticipation of my new keyboard, I did all kinds of research to see how everyone else felt about it thus far. Many people have complained that the F keys did not function they way they are label. I like to call these people idiots because rather than try and find a solution to the problem, they complained. In less than 15 minutes I figured out how to rectify this problem: Go to System Preferences, Keyboard & Mouse, choose the tab labeled “Keyboard”, and uncheck the only box under that tab. Done. If you don’t do this, you’ll have to hold the “fn” or function button down to use those keys as described by the label on them. I find this annoying so I just unchecked the box which so many people can’t seem to find. What is also annoying is that people thought that a company, let alone Apple, would ship a keyboard that didn’t work as intended. I mean come on people, you can make all sorts of crazy keyboard shortcuts, why would they just up and stop that? Anyways, 10/10

Overall I’m happy with my purchase and I am glad Apple gave a billion people credit back for being an early adopter. I recommended this keyboard to anyone who is looking to free up space on their computer desk, wanting a wireless solution that doesn’t involve a dongle, or who just have an addiction to the new latest and greatest hardware on the market. If you end up getting one let me know what you think or if you are close and want to play with mine, shoot me an email.
Protip: I hate number based reviews so those 10/10 are just there for show. It’s a great keyboard, just go buy it already.

LoTM is on fire today. Lighting up my RSS reader like a carpet bomb of information. Way to go.
Also, I’m sorry you lost your money. That sucks. The moral: give your friends all your money. That way you’ll never lose it. Because I’ll have spent it.
I think I’m going to spend the credit on Leopard… which is supposed to be out this month, right? Right, Apple? DO YOU HEAR ME?
Excellent forum with fantastic references and reading…. well done indeed…
